Fall School VERT : 22-23 Octobre 2007

The Fall Scholl VERT was organized by Institute Jean-Pierre Bourgin (IJPB) and Plant Genomics Research Unit (URGV), the last year of the VERT programme (The Versailles -Evry Research Training Site for Plant Biology). VERT takes part of the 6th Framework Programme for Research & Development of the European Union, the Marie Curie Host Fellowships for Early Stage Research Training (EST).
VERT PhD candidates and students presented their work. European scientists invited, who collaborate with IJPB and URGV laboratories, reported their laboratory thematics. Also Graham Wilkie, EC Scientific Officer described the Marie Curie Actions in FP7 and Career and mobility opportunities in Europe. Students were invited, the second afternoon, to visit Evry Genopole, CNG (National Center of Genotyping) and CNS (National Center of Sequencing).
This school was the opportunity to gather the students of Ile-de-France, paticularly students of the PLANTtnet PARIS network.

Functional Plant Genomics

Jean-François Morot-Gaudry, Peter Lea, Jean-François Briat

The openings offered by functional genomics reconciles organism biology and molecular biology, in order to define an integrative biology that should allow new insights about how a phenotype is built up from a genotype in interaction with its environment.

This book covers a wide area of concepts and methods in genomics. This range from international genome sequencing projects to invaluable bioinformatics tools, analytical methods of gene expression, including final metabolic products, and their specific tissue to cellular compartmentalization. This new knowledge enables readers to understand the integration of basic physiological functions, and developmental programs. Also, the establishment of tight relationships between genomics, and genetics and plant breeding reveals synergies for exploiting molecular markers, for analysing genetic variation, or for studying quantitative traits. The integration that is now feasible by these new approaches also effects ecophysiology, and opens up new perspectives for the use of modelling for the study of plant populations. This book will contribute to the dissemination of these new practices. This book is intended for advanced students in biology and agronomy, their lecturers, and for all scientists who wish to understand plant genomics rapidly, in a relatively exhaustive and synthetic form.
